A proud legacy

Van Loveren has been in the Retief family since 1937 when Hennie Retief snr acquired the land in the Robertson Valley and named it after Christina Van Loveren, an ancestor of his new bride, Jean van Zyl. When his sons, Nico and Wynand joined him on the farm they acquired more land and in 1980, 500 cases of Premium Grand Cru, the first bottled Van Loveren wine, was launched.

This wind-swept winery derives its name from the belt of land which spans the tempestuous tip of Africa’s southernmost coastline. At almost 35 degrees below the equator, this part of our fair Cape is characterised by severe winds, billowing mist and below average temperatures. A unique combination of maritime climate, alternating sites and diverse soil types work together to create the terroir which distinguishes the wines of Strandveld Vineyards.

The imminent Dr Anton Rupert was a successful industrialist and prominent proponent of South African culture, classical music, and the arts. He acquired La Motte in 1970 and had it meticulously restored it to its original condition. The estate remains in the family, who proudly continue and build on his legacy. It is currently owned by his daughter, Hanneli Rupert- Koegelenberg, and run by her husband, Hein Koegelenberg. It is governed with a strong focus on historical and cultural preservation.

The Graaff family have played a defining role in the South African political, social and business landscape for over four generations. Mullineux Family Wines was established in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Within a very short time period the winery established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and on the international front. By 2019 they had received twenty five 5 star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide, as well as being awarded Platter’s Winery of the Year in 2014, 2016 and 2019. In addition, Andrea Mullineux was named Wine Enthusiast’s 2016 International Winemaker of the Year and in 2017 Chris & Andrea were Tim Atkin’s South African Winemakers of the Year. In order to purchase tools or attend church, they had to undertake a long and arduous wagon journey along primitive roads to Stellenbosch. It was on their return from one such journey in 1704 that the settlers found their house burnt to the ground and the farm destroyed. Hence the estate’s sad name, “Allesverloren”, which means “all is lost”. Considering its name, it is ironic that this gem of the Swartland wine region has had such a happy fate. By 1806, Allesverloren’s owners had already harvested the estate's first wine grapes and since the estate passed into the hands of the Malan family 140 years ago, Allesverloren has gone from strength to strength. Our estate has increased to 227 hectares and our wines continue to earn international acclaim.

Our story began in 2019. The inspiration behind creating a de-alcoholised brand in both the local and international market is courtesy of our dear Aunt Sharon. Sharon spelt backwards, ‘Norahs’, and with the addition of ‘Valley’, allowed us to marry the story to the name and create a sense of place. The market has dictated a need for an organic, vegan friendly beverage to be made available to consumers that do not drink.
